Could anyone advise the condition for a workflow so that if a case is reactivated the statuscode changes to a Re-opened instead of the standard In Progress.
Any help appreciated.

I'll give it a try after the Christmas Break.
If you don't want to write a plugin you could always create a new field (new_deactivated - Yes/No). Use a real time workflow to set this flag to Yes when the record status changes to Inactive. Then, using another workflow triggered on status change, check the status of this flag and if it is Yes set the status to Re-opened followed by setting this flag back to No. Bit of a bonkers ways of doing it but saves writing some code.
Write a custom plugin . It has preimage and postimage which will help you to get the last status and current status.

that would change all active cases .. I just want the ones that get re-activated.
So case has been resolved and then customer complains so case is reactivated - this is when I need the status to change to re-opened.
