Do you use a "base solution"?

So obviously there is the default solution, but does anyone create a "base solution" to work with? If so,

1) What are the benefits of the base solution?

2) What components did you include in the base?

3) Any other tips?

Thanks!

It is a good idea to create a solution to work with because:

    1. It is a good way of keeping track of the version of your solution that is installed on the target environment

    2. Keeps track of which components are customised.

    3. Much quicker to import smaller solutions (as apposed to the default solution)

    4. Allows you to create multiple solution components for different features.

    See more at msdn.microsoft.com/.../gg334530.aspx

(Top tip - avoid managed solutions unless you are an ISV!)

    Hope this helps.

1.) You can consider MS CRM a base solution that is provided to different customers, and gives customers freedom to customize and configure. And over time, MS develops and releases new features, that customers can apply to their own custom environment. So the benefit is obvious that the provider of such a solution can easily manage and release updates. As well if you want to brand your deployment.

    2) it really depends on what you want to include, but typically common components that you want to deploy to your recipients. It can be core entities, site map, form, processes etc.

    3) most likely you should configure your base solution to managed - it is read only, easy uninstall or future upgrade. But before doing so, please read about managed vs unmanaged, you just need to balance the pros and cons
