Dynamics 365 Add-in for Outlook - create contact without tracking email

Hello all.

Does anyone know if it's possible to prevent the tracking of an email when a user is simply trying to create a new contact for an Unknown Recipient?  The current behavior I'm experiencing is that when the user clicks the "+" and saves the new contact, the email is automatically tracked.  I realized I can then go back to "untrack" the email but my preference would be that the email wasn't automatically tracked in the first place.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

    Hello @Gtwynstra,

When you track email, it will create new email activity record. You can use this entity to write your plugin/workflow & throw error for Unknown recipient.

    You can check "emailtrackingid" property.

Please mark it as resolved if it helps you.

    Thanks
    Anupam

    Hi there,

This behavior is part of Dynamics 365's default logic — when you create a new contact from an unknown recipient, the system assumes intent to engage and automatically tracks the email.

To prevent this automatic tracking, here are a few suggestions:

    1. Disable Auto-Tracking Rules:

      • Check your Mailbox Settings and Tracking Options in Dynamics 365.
      • You may need to adjust the Auto Track settings under Personal Options > Email to prevent automatic tracking when new contacts are created.
    2. Use Manual Contact Creation:

      • Instead of creating the contact directly from the email pane, consider creating the contact manually in Dynamics 365 first, then refresh the email. This avoids triggering the tracking logic.
    3. Custom Plugin or Workflow:

      • If this behavior is disruptive, a developer can create a plugin or workflow to intercept and prevent tracking when a contact is created from an unknown recipient.
    4. Feedback to Microsoft:

      • This is a common request, and submitting feedback via the Dynamics Ideas portal may help prioritize a future enhancement.

Let me know if you'd like help configuring the mailbox or exploring a custom solution!

Please verify if this response was helpful.

    Best regards!
