Do I require a New License for AX2009 upgrade to AX2012

we currently run AX 2009 and planning to upgrade to AX 2012. My questions are

1. Do I require a new License to perform the upgrade from AX2009 to AX2012.

2. What is the approximate cost of the New License

3. Is an In-place upgrade possible.

The licensing in AX 2012 is quite different than 2009. You will have to work with your partner to "convert" your license from 2009 to 2012.

The main differences are that users are now NAMED users, no longer concurrent users. However, to compensate for situations where you have a lot of shop floor users for example but they work different shifts, you can actually get "lighter" types of users (or even "devices"). Although it looks bad, overall I've found the license costs to be comparable. It does require some investigation on your part on how your users are using the system.

Another difference is that you now get access to all modules in AX.

To convert the license you have 2 choices:

    1) get a credit for your 2009 license value and buy 2012 licenses from scratch

    2) "converting" your license to 2012, this may depend on when you got your 2009 license or what it contains

You'll have to work with your VAR of record to get through this process.

To answer your third question above - no an upgrade in-place to Dynamics AX 2012 is not possible. A separate target database will be required.
