Can we deploy IFD for CRM 2015 on-prem "without" providing access from the Internet?

We're upgrading from CRM 2011 on prem to CRM 2015 on prem and we would like to give our Tablet Users a more touch friendly interface via the CRM Tablet Client. Can we configure IFD "without" making our CRM vulnerable to Internet access? Ideally, we'd like to configure IFD to enable the Tablet Client but limit access to our Intranet. Our Network Team offers AnyConnect, AirWatch and Apigee but they won't consider IFD because they don't want the Internet Facing Deployment. I was hoping the IFD can be configured for Intranet access only!
