Error printing Word template in GP

Posted on by

I am getting an error  when trying to print a word template in Dynamics GP.

It says the file is corrupt and cannot be opened. When I click on OK it asks if I want to recover it. When it tries it comes up with another error that says "A document must contain exactly one root element. Location: Part: /word/fontTable.xml Line1, Column 0".

Has anyone seen this before? What does this mean?

A little background on this is I made the Word templates on the SQL server. It prints fine on the SQL server. They use Citrix and all of the users on the Citrix server cannot print the report. They get the errors above.

When I look at the logging it shows that 2 processes started but none finishes. See below.

10: 16 hours. 20 minutes.38 seconds. 33 milliseconds. = START - DATA:C:\Users\kkenny\AppData\Local\Temp\8\TNTD416.tmp TEMPLATE:C:\Users\kkenny\AppData\Local\Temp\8\SOP Blank Invoice Form Template 062818 v2L15 2~1.docx REPORT:C:\Users\kkenny\AppData\Local\Temp\8\Health Group Management TEST Invoice [-STDINV000014-] 2018.06.28_16;20;37 ~2-1.docx LOGO:C:\Users\kkenny\AppData\Local\Temp\8\HGM_logo_sign reduced 10.jpg
30: 16 hours. 20 minutes.38 seconds. 486 milliseconds. = START - REPORT:C:\Users\kkenny\AppData\Local\Temp\8\SOP Blank Invoice Form~2.docx

Thank you in advance of any help you can offer.

RE: Error printing Word template in GP

    Hi Cowboy

I see you re posted and explained your error with more information.

It is most likely what I replied in my previous post that the Maintain Compatibility with previous word versions is not marked.

Open the word template and try saving with the box marked to maintain compatibility.

If you don't see this option, then follow this link to a blog that will explain how to fix this issue.

    Hi Jeffery,

    Thank you for your reply.

I find it strange also that it prints just find from the SQL server but not Citrix. I think it has something to do with the Citrix server.

The version of office is the same on the SQL server and the Citrix server. All users log into GP through the Citrix server. No workstations.

I know about the Maintain compatibility and I made sure it was checked. I even installed the Word add-in for GP on one of the users profile. I exported the XML and imported into a word template on his session and imported that into GP and tried again to print from his machine.

    I got the same errors.

    Thank your for your ideas.

I blogged about this a few years aback. Take a look at my article Word Templates: We can't open template because we found a problem with its contents. In summary, when you print from the server, you are most likely printing one document at a time. The user, may be attempting to print more than one document. However, the issue is with the body of the template itself, assuming Office compatibility is not a problem.

RE: Error printing Word template in GP

    Hi Mario,

First of off I feel honored that you replied to my post. I have followed your posts for years and received a lot of very good information.

Next the template will not even print one document at a time from the Sales Transaction Entry window for the users on Citrix, however I can print multiple documents from Print Sales Documents on the SQL server.

I read your post that you referred to and found it very interesting. In it you mention that Open XML uses a set of APIs to stream the data into the ZIP and XML standards. Do you know what the set of APIs are? Because it prints fine on the SQL server I am wondering if they have the APIs locked down on the Citrix server.

I also took out the lot/serial number from the template. I also removed other data like ordered and backorder because all of their items are service. What is the proper way to do this? Remove it from the Report Writer report first?

However, this does not explain why it works from the SQL server and not Citrix.

This is holding them up from sending out invoice so I just opened a case with Microsoft support.

If you have answers for the above questions I would still like to hear from you.

Thank you again for your reply.

First off, thank you for the kind words and the readership :-)

You can find the OpenXML 2.0 SDK on the installation media under the redistributable objects folder (\redist\OpenXMLFormatSDK). Start by installing this, perhaps this is where your problem lies. If you have one place where the template is working as you expect, I would refrain from making any changes to it as this would be introducing yet another variable into the equation.

We have a similar issue. When we print to screen in Word, the document number of pages jumps from 12 - 14 pages and back.

    Couple things I would check:

    1. Do a Citrix console session and check to see if you can run the template report from the console

    1. If the above works fine, then I suspect user profiles are being roamed and that's not recommended with GP.
