Set the default country/region code prefixing - Personal Options

So looking under the user personal options in CRM 2013 I see at the bottom there is an option stating:

"Set the default country/region code"

There is a checkbox to enable this prefixing and then a 'Country/Region Code Prefix' field that allows you to enter data.

Can someone explain how this is used?  Why is this a user setting and not a system setting?

This setting is actually both a system setting and a user setting. You can find the system setting in Settings->Administration->System Settings -> General tab

Users simply have a way of overriding the system setting when needed.

Scenario when this could be useful:

A company has their main office with most of their employees in Spain. So they set the system setting for the region code to that of Spain. They also have a smaller office with 3 employees in the UK working with local clients. These 3 employees would have no need of the default prefix of Spain since their clients are mainly UK-based. Thus they would want to set the override to the prefix of UK.

Thanks Daniel.  This definitely makes sense.  I'm not really familiar with 'Region Codes' in general though.  How are they used in business?

Is there is an example anyone has on how they are currently using Region Codes in their business?

Main example I know of is when people have CRM click-to-call integrated with Lync/Skype. Those applications needs the full phone number in order to make the call but it may be that the people entering data in CRM isn't always including the prefix. In those cases, the country and or region code could be automatically inserted when you click the number to make the call if you have a default prefix set up.

Region codes are much like country codes but more regional. The +46 prefix in front of Swedish numbers is a country code. Following that may come another prefix which all the numbers within a specific region start with. For example Stockholm has a regional prefix of 08. Technically, if your business only operated within Stockholm and you were using click-to-call then you could have your phone numbers entered without the +46 prefix and without the 08 prefix, thus shortening the amount of characters you have to type.
