What is the Configuration option in Product Dimensions

Hi Experts,
So far as I know in Product Master setup you choose "Predefined Variant" in Configuration Technologies
In Product Dimensions it doesn't have Configuration

If you choose "Dimension-Based Configuration" in Configuration Tehcnologies
In Product Dimensions it shows Configuration

What is the use of Configurations option?
Can anyone explain to me?
