Connect PowerBI to Customer Instance

Hello,

We have multiple Dynamics Business Central customers and I am trying to connect PowerBI Desktop to a specific customers instance.  The customer has added our account as a guest in their Azure Active Directory and has permissioned the account with an External Accountant licenses as well as provided Super permissions within BC.  We are able to login to BC through the web portal as expected.

When we try to connect PowerBI Desktop we go through the Get Data Wizard, and select the Dynamics 365 Business Central connector.  We login using the permissioned account.  However, we do not see the customers instance.

If we try to edit the Data Source settings we receive an error that the instance does not exist.

Questions:

- What is the correct format for the Environment dialog box?  Where do I find that value?

- After we enter the correct environment URL  is the Company required or will all companies be displayed?

- Is there a permission beyond Super that is required to connect with PowerBI?

Thank you,

Matt

What authentication type? If it’s basic then you need a web service key. Eventually only oauth will be accepted

Not sure but the login portion proceeds as expected.  The Office 365 login box appears and the login is successful.  The issue is that we do not know how to fill out the Environment dialog box to point PowerBI at the correct Instance.

Tenant id is usually followed by “/production” or “/sandbox”

Apparently the PowerBI desktop client has some issues connecting to other tenants.  Again, we are using an external account (guest Azure AD account) that should be able to connect to the tenant.  However, the PowerBI desktop client will only connect to the tenant of the primary domain.

We were able to work around this bug by choosing OData as the connection type instead of choosing the built in Dynamics BC connector type.  If you need your OData URL you can find this in the Dynamics Portal by searching for Web Services.
