Taking backup for a single company in AX2012

Hi,

I have question like is it possible to bakup only for one single company among a number of legal entities? I have around 10 companies inside my AX 2012 and I would like to take backup of only one company and restore it in my testing environment.

Your help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Dhanoop R.Warrier

you may use following chart, to see what you want to do and what are possibilities for that, so you can select appropriate tool

    Hi Dhanoop,

Does the test environment has only one company? Or are there multiple and you want to restore only one legal entity?

The test data transfer tool can be used if the data from all legal entities in the test environment may be deleted. This tool truncates the contents of the table first prior to insert new data from the exported source.

It would be easier to copy all legal entities from the production environment using this tool or maybe restore a SQL backup and change some references like reporting server, websites etc.

    Hi Andre,

My test environment got a number of legal entities, around 10. I know the procedure of taking the SQL backup and restoring it but the issue is if the backup needs to be restored for only one company then restoring the whole backup doesn't helpful. That is why I am finding a method to restore only one company among a group of companies. My test environment is a replication of live environment.

    Thanks,

    Hi Dhanoop,

It is too hard to replace only one legal entity. This is due to many foreign key relations depending on record ids. I would not recommend to update only one legal entity in the test environment. If it is related to updating some setup tables, probably you can use Data import/export framework for it.

another approach can also be there but would also give little tough time, but less effort as compared to DIXF.

that is take SQL backup, restore it on target environment. Fix whatever references. Open AX. Now you have Target environment with multiple companies.

Go to each unwanted company one by one, run SYSDataBaseTransDelete.

But in this case very important thing is to customize SysDataBaseTransDelete class, before running it to include Master Data Tables and setup tables as well. This can be done by including table types TransactionHeader, TransactionLine, Main, Group

Remove all unwanted companies and stay with only needed company.

    Hi Andre,

I have followed the procedure System Administration --> Data export/import. I could export one file by this but didn't import it and check whether it is working or not.

Let me tell you why I am trying to do restoring backup for a single company. I got 10 legal entities and when doing something specifically for one company like year ending, inventory closing etc, first I am doing in test environment. Now what is happening is if something goes wrong, I have to restore the whole backup but if there is an option of restoring only one company I can save a lot of time and energy. Even though I have tried Data Export/Import it was taking more than 10 hours to take backup and got some errors as well. So if you think there is any solution for taking backup and restore it for a single company please share it for me.

    Thanks,

    Hi Shoaib,

The last suggestion doesn't look good for me. Because deleting legal entities at the table level is not a good idea, I think and that is not what I am looking for also.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    Hi Dhanoop,

I understand your situation now. There is not an option to restore one company as it was available in previous versions of AX. The errors you get using Data Export/Import is also due to the record ids.

The quickest option now would be creating a backup before you start e.g. the inventory closing.

I do agree with the last point motioned by André

if we do import data using Data Import/export, which is part of System Administration, the system recreates new recId for all records during import.

This can cause a problem for tables which has Foreign key relationship based on RecId
