I am new to Dynamics and i am performing a migration from SL to GP and wanted to see if anybody else has done this before and how it has been done.

I have done 1 migration from SL to GP. As you may already know, there is no migration utility. Therefore, the migration will be similar to migrating from any other accounting package. Fortunately, many Dynamics resellers have expertise in both GP and SL which will prove useful for the migration.
The core elements to migrate are:
General Ledger: Chart of Accounts and some number of years of history
Receivables: Customers and Open Transactions (no historical transactions)
Payables: Vendors and Open Transactions (no historical transactions)
Someone with expertise in SL can help export all the data into a format that can easily be imported into GP using Integration Manager.
The data conversion from Dynamics SL to GP was a problem for us as well. We had many years of historical transactions that were considered "business critical" and we couldn't just leave it behind. All our management budgeting, forecasting, FRX Financial reports, P&L's, Balance Sheet reports and all our Project Management tracking needed to be converted to Dynamics GP 10. We searched for months and found a few GP/SL IT firms that said they could do the full data conversion. After almost three months and 200% over budget we decided that the typical GP or SL partner was not up to the task.
At a Microsoft seminar one of the Microsoft Reps. gave us a Dynamics GP data conversion company, SDSI, that specializes in Dynamics GP full historical transaction data conversions. Our project was a bit complex in addition to converting from SL we also had offices running QuickBooks, Peachtree, MAS 90 and MAS 200. We asked SDSI to convert all Project data from SL, Peachtree and MAS 200 to the Dynamics GP Project Accounting Module and all GL Account "Class" data to be converted to the Dynamics GP Analytical Accounting dimension codes. We converted almost ten years of historical transactions to GP that were created as GP batches and then fully posted through the GL. This resulted in the ability to have full drill down from the original transaction all the way through to the GL. I would recommend using a GP data conversion "specialist" company like SDSI as they have years of experience and all the data mappings from SL and most other accounting software to convert ALL the critical business historical transactions to GP. They are a Microsoft ISV Gold Partner for Dynamics GP and have a certified GP data conversion tool but they provided a data conversion service for us, (http://www.SiliconDigitalSystems.com/DataConversion).
You'll find some MS Partners suggesting just to have their team convert the Master Records and opening balances to GP. I tell them that it would be akin to buying a Ferrari without an engine. What good is it to leave all your core financial, sales, inventory, project and payroll data behind in your old SL accouting system? Well this was our experience, hope it helps.
