Hello Experts,

We are planning for upgrade of CRM 2013 to CRM 2016.

Right now we have CRM 2013 with UR 5 and SQL Server 2008 R2. As per the initial analysis we planned for upgrade of CRM 2013 to CRM 2016 and SQL Server upgrade from 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2016.

We have some queries.

1. What is the latest UR for CRM 2016?
2. How much time will it take to complete whole upgrade on Production environment considering we have 350  GB database size and 6 servers?
3. What are the hardware configuration required for Database servers.
4. Can we upgrade DB and only one CRM server to CRM 2016 and then add other servers in cluster with latest installation?
5. Do we need to execute any specific activities post upgrade ( Manual steps on server, indexing, DB clean-up, etc.)
6. Do we need to change any configurations in CRM for upgrade to take place. Any specific port opening between servers?
7. Active directory for user migration during upgrade process?

Regards,
Rahul

RE: Upgrade CRM 2013 to CRM 2016

The product is no more called as CRM. It is Dynamics 365 now. CRM 2016 and Dynamics 365 v8 are one and the same.

It will have versions from now on. latest version of Dynamics 365 is v9.

Hope I am clear with my explanation.

Build 8.1 is 2016, with Build 8.2 the name has changed to 365.

    Thanks for your reply here.

One doubt I have, the update roll 8.2.2.112 is for Microsoft Dynamics 365 or CRM 2016?

    Regards,

    Rahul

    Hi,

    1. Latest Update for CRM 2016 is 2.2 (8.2.2.x). You can find version history here.

    2. Time for upgrade depends on the upgrade approach, complexity of customization, quality of data, presence of unsupported customization in your implementation. I can say It would take 12 hours for up-gradation. (You can still reduce if you plan it well). You can find different approaches here.

    3. Follow this link for hardware / software compatibility https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3124955/compatibility-with-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2016

    4. Yes, you can upgrade one server first then you can add others into the cluster.

    Few suggestions:

    1) Remove all unsupported customization from the solution (if any).

    2) Delete all unnecessary data before upgrade

    3) Cleanup POA, AsyncOperation tables. Kill all long waiting processes (if any).

    4) DO NOT go for in place upgrade approach. [Personal Experience]

    5) Convert Java Scripts & Plugins into business rules / workflows as much as you can.
