MES Licensing AX2012

Hi

Does anyone have a document referencing how MES is licensed in AX2012? In AX2009 you had separate shop floor users that were licensed in bundles, I think the first was 1-50. I am not sure how this works in AX2012 and can find no explanation, it seems they maybe functional or task users but I am not sure if they need to be named, or what differences are now apparent in the licensing of MES/SFDC.

Any pointers appreciated!

    Hi Steven,

Interesting question. When users have acces to a terminal only, I think this terminal is a device CAL. The users of the time registration only uses the terminal for starting and ending their tasks without an own user ID in AX. If the users also uses other area's in AX these users will be setup in the Users of AX and then also have a certain license CAL (Enterprise, functional etc).

This is my summary of the licensing guide... I'm not sure about it.

No neither am I, whilst you have the device CAL that can represent the resource you may also have the resource as the person and then they are a functional user (I believe), but I am just not sure and cannot find anything on it. Have a feeling I read about separate licenses based upon the active worker list but no idea now. Oh well, will wait and see if anyone else answers! Thanks

Confirmation from Microsoft is as follows:

In a scenario where there are 200 shop floor employees and 20 machines configured for registration on the shop floor the business do not have to procure 200 Task user CALs unless they require 200 Shop floor machines from where these 200 Shop floor users log in. If they use only 20 devices for these 200 users to log in, they need only 20 device CALs.

Device CALs do not stop you from creating multiple user logins until they log in from the same device. During the license audit, the onus is on the customer to prove that they all have logged in from the same machines.

The interpretation is that as long as the PC on the Shop Floor is connected to AX using a ‘User’ with a Device CAL (lower than an Enterprise CAL) then, any number of Time Registration Workers can register jobs from it without further licensing.

Hi Steven, useful information. Do you know answer, maybe for situation if we use terminal server

with DEV CAL and multiple users connected on it via rdp? On Shop floor too...

    Thx

    Hi Josip and Steven.

Have you run the report to display what your current CAL usage is. Device CALs, I believe are for Devices such as portable scanners etc connected via webservices or business connectors, not terminals. Every unique ad (or other) user who logs into AX will be one of either Self Serve, Task, Functional or Enterprise CALs.

Josip - I guess it depends on what logs in via TS but I ultimately do not know.

Jonathan - It was a theoretical question, not one in an actual environment, so I cannot run the report. However the response from Microsoft stated a shop floor machine logged on as a machine is a CAL device license, so I am taking that - yes if they were configured as logging onto AX as individual users your statement would be correct, but the machine logs into AX and the user registers time is the distinct difference and scenario I questioned MS about.

    Hi Steven,

thanks for this useful information. It seems to me that Microsoft doesn't know exaclty how to cope with that. All my questions towards Mcrosoft concerning this issue have not been answered yet.  What's the source of your Information?

    HI Ronald

I would agree, Microsoft are at times "vague" on this issue. My source is the licensing guide and the support requests I log each time I have to answer the question for a customer.

    Hi Jonathan,

did you  have a source for your statement, that device CALS can only be used for scanners or other devices but not for normal workstations.

This would mean I can't use a Enterprise Device CAL (for example) for a single Ax client which is used by more than one person in shift work which do all the same?

What is the definition of device?

    regards

    Douglas

    Hi Douglas,

Scanners, card readers, POS devices and RFID readers need a so called Limited Device CAL, the terminals that are used then for these devices to pass on the info to AX need a Device CAL.

So to directly address your question you should be able to use a Device CAL for different people in different shifts.

Mind that all this is just a summary of various documents about licensing that I have read, I am not 100% sure.

    Regards,

    Damjan
