Install Dynamics GP 10 on a laptop

I am trying to install Dynamics GP 10 on my laptop.  My laptop has Windows 7 - 32 bit, a 320GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM, and a Duo Core 1.83MGh  processor.  I want to install the program so I can work with the sample company and become familiar with the program.  I installed both the program and Microsoft SQL 2008 Server Express in accordance with Victoria Yudin's "Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 Implementation" book.

My problem arises when I attempt to create the ODBC data source.  I click on the "System DSN" tab, select "SQL Server Native Client 10.0" and follow the rest of Victoria's steps.  When I attempt to finalize the process, I receive this message - "no such host".   Selecting one of  the other SQL's yields no better results.

Obviously, I am doing something wrong.  I am an accountant, not a computer person.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Peter

Attempt to login into SSMS and take note of the instance name. It will something like LaptopComputerName\SQLExpress. Use the complete instance name in your DSN.

Since this is local install, you can use LOCALHOST\SQLEXPRESS.  I have a similar install on my laptop now, which I use for GP development.  Remember to use SQL Authentication, not Windows as a good practice.

    Gentlemen,

    Thank you for your help.

However, I simply can't make this work - it's all beyond me.

When funds are available, I will pay someone to do the installation.

I am in Chicago, so if anyone can post the name of an individual I can hire, I will greatly appreciate it.

    Kind regards,

    Peter

We're in recession so save your money. It's pretty simple installation.  It could be your SQL Server configuration somewhere.  Tell me what Windows 7 version (Home, Pro) on your laptop even though it doesn't matter much. If you'd like to leave your e-mail address, I'll contact you and walk you through over the phone without charge.  However, I live in the West Coast if you don't mind paying for my long distance bill. Just kidding.  Is anyone paying for long distance anymore?

I would second the offer. I am on the east coast so if you want to pick at time around 5pm EST I can remote to your laptop to get this running. I use www.teamviewer.com. Just drop me an email to set this up.

    Thong and Richard,

Thank you for your kind offers.

The operating system on my laptop is Windows 7 Home Premium.  Due to frustration and ignorance, I deleted the SQL server program from my laptop.  Perhaps, I originally installed the incorrect one.  It would be helpful if one of you could tell me which Microsoft SQL server program I should download.  Once I have that program installed, I won't appear to be a complete buffoon.

    Regards,

    Peter

Go here and download the 32 bit version. Once you get that going I would be glad to help get GP going. If you need help installing SQL just let me knolw and we can do both together.

If you already uninstalled SQL Server, I suggest you should uninstall GP 10 too.  Start with a new fresh installation for both.  First, install SQLServer, and then GP.  A good thing about reinstalling GP is it will automatically create and configure an ODBC connection to GP for you.

Richard offers his help with remote access is lot easier than on phone. Please contact him at URL provided.

    Richard/Thong,

    I uninstalled Dynamics GP10.

    Installed the SQL server –

    named instance – dynamics

SQL Server Database Engine – NT Authority\System

SQL Server Datatbase Services – NT Authority\Local System

    Account provisioning –

    mixed mode – password PDA1234

I selected “Install the native mode default configuration”

Installed Dynamics GP10 – selected “Do not create a data source”

    ODBC

    “System DSN” tab

added “SQL Server Native Client 10.0”

    name - gp

    description – dynamics10

    server – dynamics

SQL Server Authentication – login sa  password PDA1234

Click “next” and I get – connection failed, no such host is known

    I need a drink – gin, vodka – whatever.

Again, thank you for your efforts.

    Peter
