GP 2013 R2 Payroll Update Crashes

I am trying to run the payroll tax update on a W8.1 workstation. As soon as I select Check for Payroll Tax Update, the window appears but is immediately followed with a crash.  The ugly message is as follows. Has anyone else seen this?

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

    Richard,

    It appears as though this error has to do with Active X not being properly registered on the workstation.  

    If the following dlls are not registered, this kind of error can present:

    mfc30.dll     olepro32.dll     msvcrt20.dll       mfc40.dll     msvcrt40.dll

    Here is a KB, which explains how to register the required components - it is geared towards developers deploying Visual FoxPro code, but I believe your error has the same root cause, and this was the best tech doc I could find on the subject.

    Harry, these files do not even exist on this brand new W8.1 workstation. Has anyone else had this problem using W8.1? Can anyone from Microsoft chime in on this? The temporary solution is to do a manual load but even that has its problem as this screen gets locked open.

    Can't you just run the SQL script Richard? I don't support Payroll but I know you can just run a script in SQL if you have problem with this feature.

    Hello Richard!

    One other thing to try is to make sure you right click on GP and run as administrator when launching if you will be running the tax update. I've scene a few problems with the tax updates if you don't.

    Joshua - thank you for this reminder.  Logging into my PC as a computer non-admin for several years now, you would think I would remember to launch as admin.  I was receiving the exact error as Richard above, and your suggestion resolved it perfectly.
