Connect to database always requires two tries

This happens every time, so there must be a good explanation! When connecting to the database in Store Administrator from an RMS register, there is a 30 second delay and the message appears "Timed out."

On the second attempt, the db connection is made immediately and all is well. Any ideas on why the first connection attempt always fails, and the second attempt always succeeds?

    You could increase the timeout to 60 seconds under RMS Administrator.  This is the default since SP2 was released.  This sounds like a firewall issue or a network delay issue.  You should try turning off your windows firewall and see if that is causing the problem.  Also most internet security suites include a firewall which could also cause this problem.  

    Don;t leave the firewall off but this would atleast narrow down the root cause of the delay in connecting to the server.

    I think you need to configure sql server network utility --> set priority of connectivity using TCPIP or Named Pipe on enabled protocol by order list box.

    Hi Amano2707. On what Windows OS is this happening? If posterior to Windows XP, try this next, right-click on the shortcut icon of the RMS POS or RMS Manager. In the Compatibility tab, check the last option "Always run this program as Administrator" or use "Change the configuration for all users"button to do the same for all the users...

    Also, check the same with the windows firewall down, just to see if the problem is repeting...

    I cannot answer your specific question, but I can say that I feel your pain.  It is usually POS that will not connect, and we have to reboot the computer--sometimes two or three times before it connects.  Many times we have to reboot the administrator computer in the back office.  I, too, would appreciate input on this issue.

    What version of RMS are you using?

    What version of Windows are you using?

    Have you tried disabling Windows Firewall?

    Do your computers use any 3rd party security software (ZoneAlarm, etc)?

    If so, have you tried disabling the 3rd party security software?

    Is the database server on a Virtual Machine?

    What are the hardware specs (CPU, RAM, etc) of the database server?
