Recent changes to RDP access announcement from Microsoft.

I recently received a notification...

ACTION REQUIRED: Changes to Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) access to Tier 1 environments for Dynamics 365 operations applications

Summary
As communicated previously, Microsoft is removing the use of Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to access environments managed by Microsoft. As RDP access is required for development, going forward customers will be required to develop using a Cloud Hosted Environment or download a local “Virtual Hard Disk” (VHD) within Lifecycle Services. Cloud Hosted Environments will allow customers to manage the compute, size, and cost of these environments. This infrastructure change will ensure that customers decouple development tools from any running environment.

Etc.

What sticks out is the statement in bold above. I'm relatively new to DX development and have been dev'ing in a VM which has more pluses than minuses. My understanding is that the VM route was the standard but knew you run the VHD (and I have) locally. Is anyone ( or teams) using the VHD approach for developing production functionality? Are there any setup differences from running in a VM?

Thanks.

James

    Hi jkmajcen,

We are running the VM locally for Dev. We also have team members using cloud hosted environments for Dev. I am not sure if I understand your question regarding the VHD approach. We always download the VHD from LCS and configure it to a Hyper-V VM. Are you doing anything differently for your Dev VM?

Thanks for the reply Gunjan. Nothing crazy on the Dev VM, it was must my understanding that the Azure VM was the only option for dev. I would much prefer to dev on a local Hyper-V instance rather than RDP'ing to the Azure VM.

    Hi jkmajcen,

We have been using the Dev VMs hosted locally for a few years now. They are cost effective and are especially useful when you have a large group of developers.

The process is the same as mentioned. You can download the VHDs from LCS and configure a local VM.

    Hi Anasayub,

You can find the date in an e-mail from MS, but looks like it's the same as all from the 1st of December 2020
