Sales Order for multilevel assembly BOM does not auto create assembly orders

Hi All,

We use multi level assembly BOMs that are assemble to order. For example below structure:

BOM1

          BOM2

                    Item A

                    Item B

          Item C

Here BOM2 is part of BOM1 and BOM2 has purchased parts A and B.  Item C is directly linked to BOM1 and purchased.  Now when assume we have A,B and C in stock. When we enter a sales order for BOM1 it gives us "not enough stock warning" on BOM2 which is assemble to order item. If we proceed system creates assembly order for BOM1 but not for BOM2 although all base components (A,B,C) in stock for the order.  Currently we have to manually create an assembly order for BOM2 and post to increase stock. Is there a better way to handle this as ideally two assembly orders should be created for BOM1 and BOM2 automatically and released when inventory pick list is posted. Process is sales order --inventory pick list. Perhaps an APP exist to streamline the process

I have the same question (0)

Does BOM 2 appear in the item planning worksheet? Different scenario but when handling multi level BOMs for production you would use one of the planning pages so it assesses each of the levels. The sophistication of the planning from the assembly lines linked to sales will be limited. I’d assume there are some subscriber events which may aid you

    Hello Samantha,

I'm afraid, this is a design limitation. The only workaround would be like you describe to do it manually or to expand the first BOM in the Sales Order (but I just did a quick test without warehouse in the back). When you would like to pass this on to our Product Management you can create an ideas entry experience.dynamics.com/.../ to bring this up again.

If there is an extension out, which might handle this issue I can't say.

    Hope this helps.

    Samantha,

As other have written, this is standard BC functionality for the Assembly Order feature. I have not seen an APP touching on this subject yet. You might consider, within the Assembly Order, exploding BOM 2 line so the components appear within a single Assembly Order. This is not the perfect solution but an option.

Also, you might consider asking your Partner to write an Extension that when an Assembly Order is created with an Item that Assembly Order = TRUE, it auto-explodes the BOM for that Item.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Steve

If you use 'Order Planning' (Not to be confused with planning worksheet) and calculate the plan for assembly demand, you will get a very simple list showing that in order to fulfil your parent assembly order, you need a second assembly order for BOM2.

Whilst it is a manual process to run, it is quick and shows all gaps between supply and demand. Dates suggested will align to requirements and you can choose to reserve the line so that the dependency between BOM2 and BOM1 is strictly observed.

This is because you're setting up your BOM2 as type Production BOM in the BOM setup. Change it to type Item and MRP will suggest producing BOM2 as well. Hope it helps.
