SQL Server version that covers CRM 2016/365 Extended Support End Date?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

The Dynamics CRM 2016/365 Extended Support End Date is currently January 13th 2026.

However, SQL Server 2016 does not go this far as per https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3124955/compatibility-with-microsoft-dynamics-crm-2016.

Currently only SQL Server 2016 (RTM) CU2 is compatible, which has an Extended Support End Date of January 9th 2018.

The latest Service Pack (1) for SQL Server 2016, which would give a date of July 14th 2026, however this is not officially compatible.

SQL Server 2014 (SP2) is compatible (date July 9th 2024), but is 18 months too early.

Therefore unless I'm mistaken there is no current version of SQL Server that has an Extended Support End Date covering the date for Dynamics CRM 2016/365.

Am I correct?

As CRM can't work without a SQL Server, would it not be reasonable to expect a version of SQL Server that covers the CRM extended support end date, at all times?  Currently we have SQL 2014 that covers it partially, however I fear that a) no further SQL 2014 updates will extend that period, or b) SQL 2016 will not have it's latest (or later) Service Packs validated and thus not be available to use officially.  So, we are then stuck without a "valid" SQL Server. This scenario happened with CRM 2011, so I suspect it could again with CRM 2016/365.

You are correct. SQL Server versions are not aligned with Dynamics CRM/365 versions.

The point is Microsoft does not want you to wait 8-10 years to upgrade your Dynamics or SQL product. They expect this to happen earlier, so as you update your CRM Server to a later version, that version will have different compatibility options with SQL Server.

It is also likely that as Microsoft releases service packs to the product, the compatibility with SQL Server will change.

For example CRM 2016 Service Pack x will be compatible with SQL Server 2014 Service Pack y and above.

    Hope this helps.
