Using Resources on Production Boms

Posted on by 624
Hi - is it possible to use Resources on Production Boms? I want to setup a list of tools that my machines must use. I think thinking of setting them all up as Resources and then adding a Resource to the Bom. However, it seems like on the Bom i can only use items or another bom. Any suggestions or what do other people do?

You have the option of entering a list of Tools per Operation within the Routing.  Please see screenshot below.  This information will transfer to the Production Order and can be printed on your Traveler.

Be aware this does not match a tool crib functionality where you check tools in and out, but that is something you could extend the system to handle.

Another option is to add the Tool as a Machine Center and add a parallel operation in your Routing, linking it to the operation requiring the tool.  This allows you to apply time and cost to your process as well as track capacity of the tool.  We often do this with Molds to limit the system from scheduling the same Mold on multiple machines at the same time.  If you use multiple tools at the same time on an operation, I would not recommend this approach.  It would balloon your Routing and data maintenance headache.

    Hi,
alternative way would be Items instead of resources. You can set up those items as Non-stock items and use them on BOM. Usually this is done for resources like Water - that You don't really keep in stock, but want to keep track of how much it is used.
In Your case the usage would not matter so much - as by default You can enter 1 as needed consumption - and the item will never be in shortage.
