Best Practice for form customizations: Standard form or copy of the standard form?

(0) ShareShare

Posted on by

For a long time working with Microsoft Dynamics CRM and used to work with a copy of the standard form for all the standard entities. This to make sure changes in updates did not have any influence / did not overwrite labels etc. on my customizations and the posibility to create a new copy of the standard when something is broken on the custom form.

As far as I know and I think many other consultants this is (expected to be) best practice, but now I am wondering if this really is. I googled on this topic, but did not really find a satisfying answer / argumentation on this topic.

Hopefully we can discuss this topic here and come to a final answer on this topic. Look forward to your reply! Thanks.

RE: Best Practice for form customizations: Standard form or copy of the standard form?

    Hi Nvdh,

we can create a form in different ways like

    1. we can copy the existing form & can do necessary changes. or we can create a new form

    2. can create a quick create form

    3. We can also create a role based forms so that only the user with the specified role can have access to the form.

    Plz go through this link.

    Types of Forms : - https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn531143.aspx

    Hello,

if your entity have a lot of fields and you organize them In specific design with tabs. I suggest to copy the form then remove what you want or hide tabs.

If you want new form with few fields I suggest to make new form without the complexity of old form.

RE: Best Practice for form customizations: Standard form or copy of the standard form?

    NvdH,

    Hm..Though question.

But I'd say that if for entities that are very complex, like Marketing List, Account, Contact, Campaign, Quote, Case, etc, I'd like to keep the original form and them keep the copy. I kept the original but make it deactivate or hide for those security roles so user wont aware on it,

    Because what?

Somehow, something happened, I can just deactivate the copy and activate back the original.

I found an issue posted in the forum about any changed of the Marketing List form and Quote Form, users got problem, cannot get the full list of marketing list member by type because did remove some system subgrid inside, so, have no choice but restoring using vanilla CRM and importing it to the Organization.

So, to prevent that happening, usually for complex system entities, I would like to keep it.

But, like custom entity is no need, or like competitor usually I don't keep it, even though it is still better to keep it.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

    Hi..

Here are some MS CRM customization best practice articles

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../gg509027.aspx

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../dd548493.aspx

    crmbook.powerobjects.com/.../crm-javascript-best-practices

About form customization - standard vs copy of standard form.

-- Its all depends, how you are changing form & how you are keeping your customization.

You can export complete MS CRM customization in xml format, it has everything form, attributes, views, ribbon etc.

So before making changes to form, if you take backup of your customization, then it is easy to revert it back to previous version.
