Updating the Chart of Accounts with Subcategories

Hi:

Our current chart of accounts has no subcategories.  We're in the process of compiling them.

We used a Configuration Package to import the original chart of accounts into Business Central, in the first place.

Can we use a new spreadsheet simply for "entering" the subcategories?  If so, how do we "tell" the Configuration Package that we simply want to update the accounts with subcategories?

Thanks!

John

    John,

If only updating the Subcategories I normally remove all other fields so not to update those fields I have updated inside BC already. You can always export the Configuration Package, with all the fields, and update the subcategory.

Make sure the subcategories have been setup first before updating the COA.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Just adding to what Steve mentioned.

The first important step is to make sure you create Account Category and then Account SubCategory.

Then in Configuration Package you can create new package and add the following tables to it. If you know the Sub Category Entry No then you do not need the table 570.

Then for table 15 from field only select fields you need in this case you need "Account Subcategory Entry No." then download the package and populate this field and upload back.

Make sure to test in Sandbox first

Thank you, for the outstanding explanation!

I just reviewed, on my own, some of the processes behind creating subcategories.  Wow!  It looks like having to revamp the chart of accounts, almost.

So, I'm going to need to (a) revamp the chart of accounts and (b) conduct an import.

Goodness, that is a lot of work.  Regardless, is that correct?

    Hi John

You are correct. The most important step is to revamp chart of account. Then make sure entire team understand it and agree with it. Then add needed info (sub category, etc) in BC. Then import.

    John,

Yes, as MahGah noted it is a revamp and make sure you get agreement from the team. After you setup the Account Categories and Subcategories, the COA updates are easy when loading but do this in excel first as an image then update BC.

    Thanks,

    Steve
