Best practice to change Table field's label text

Due to client request, we need to change table field's label(displaying). See picture.

What should be the best practice? If I go to table->field->label property, make change there, it means everywhere it's going to show the changed label.

But, how do I change it on fly? the dropdown grid is auto generated.

Any hint is appreciated.

Hi River,

The field on the table usually has an extended data type. You can search for the Extended data type in the AOT and change the label there. Then everywhere the extended data type is used, the new label will be visible. Note that some other labels like help text or error messages can have a text using the old label.

Personally I would try to prevent changing the standard labels. Try to convice the customer.

What exactly your requirement is? Do you have any problem with changing the label everywhere where the field is used? It's usually wanted, for the sake of consistency. Maybe you want to change it in all lookups, but not in other places. Or maybe you want to do it in that particular lookup only.

Client, at this point, saying changing label everywhere is fine. Basically, they want to change 'account number' to a weird name only they use/understand. I doubt other department users are going to like it. So I like to have options.

It's their requirement, many times, only when client see the consequence of it, then they will change mind.

Best practice is to keep label of the field consistent

so you should change the EDT lable ID.

Now it is part of our consultancy to explain user effectively what is the consequences and every user of the system should be convinced about the new changes

Other suggestion I would give if user is very much adamant to have the lookup with different label then

You need to implement it by creating a lookup form

this will involve some bit of development work

this option will not affect any other functionality and customization will be very separate

and will help keep the Best practice intact for other part of dynamics AX

But I will not prefer this option as it involves some development
