CRM on Azure VM - Authentication options

I'm investigating how users would authenticate to Dynamics 365 CRM installed as on-premise onto Azure VMs.  The CRM instance would be on the same virtual network as a DC (Domain Controller) which would provide the AD (Active Directory) for the installation.  I have this installed as a trial with the AD, SQL, and CRM on a single VM though this would not be the case in Production.

In this scenario how would users on their local work AD authenticate to CRM?  I believe that CRM IFD would need to be setup and configured.  If this was done users would be able to login to CRM using the Azure VM AD but I'm not sure how their accounts would be created/synced in the Azure VM AD and also what steps are required for the users to be able to use SSO (Single Sign On).

Can anyone help?

    There's no major difference between having the CRM Server on an Azure VM, compared to anywhere else on the same virtual network. You can use either AD authentication or IFD, though you will only be able to use AD authentication if the appropriate ports for AD authentication are open between the client and server (for instance via a VPN)

    Life will be a lot easier if the users have accounts in a domain trusted by the AD that the CRM server is in, with any trusts setup within AD. Theoretically it is possible to setup IFD and ADFS, where the ADFS (or a 3rd party claims provider) configuration has appropriate relying party trusts to another AD domain, but this is not well documented

    Hi Harj,

    I think you should consider setting up Azure AD which backs up all the MS online workloads including Dynamics 365. You can get Azure AD Connect to synchronize it with your local AD. It's completely free and definitely a better way to go in the cloud environment. It offers a lot of managed security features and you would have hard time setting up infrastructure like that on your own.
