SQL Server Upgrade

We are running Dynamics GP 2013r2 and we are upgrading our SQL Server.  I would like to upgrade to SQL Server 2016.  Will GP work with this as long as I set the compatibility level correctly on the settings for the database?  The specs for GP says the latest version of SQL that is acceptable is SQL 2014.

    As in previous versions of GP the connection will most likely fail as it checks which version of SQL is being used. I have not this combination but I doubt it will work.
