Is it important to transfer security data during GP upgrading?

During upgraded the GP 9 to GP 10, I will be prompted to run the GP Utility, then during the process it prompt me to "Transfer Security Data", see this screen-capture-1.

If I choose to point to the previous version of Dynamics.set file, then it prompt me another window (see this screen-capture-2) and I stuck with it - because the "Next" button is dim off and not allowing to proceed further steps. Even if I have click the "Update" button, and I cannot go further.

So, I restore database backup and this time I skip to do the "Transfer Security Data" and then I can proceed more further steps of the GP Utility.

Please advice, how important is the "Transfer Security Data" for the pointing Dynamics.set file ? Is it safe to ignore this ?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi David, Yes, you are safe enough to ignore this option.

What it means if you ignore is that your User security will not be upgraded. This means you will have to set up new user security once your upgrade is completed. This is not necessarily a bad thing (setting up security from scratch), since the security model has changed from 9 to 10. Unless of course you have hundreds of users - then it can take a while to reset their securities.

In my experience, the user security does not always upgrade satisfactorily, and you end up re-implementing security anyway. In fact, of all of the upgrades from 9 to 10 that we have done, we always found it much easier to ignore this step and reimplement security after the upgrade.

It also gives the customer a chance to re-evaluate their security settings and tighten control up a bit (delete unused users etc), as security naturally tends to get lax after using GP for a while, and as users come and go (we've all seen the new employee who 6 months after joining is still using some other user's ID to get into GP).

    Best regards,

Thank you so much for the valuable sharing of experiences. Because this setting "Transfer Security Data", I did not managed to have a smooth upgrading from GP8 to GP10 or GP9 to GP10.

    Thanks again, Ian.

    HI William,

I can only second Ian on this, because I dealt during 3 months last year with GP10 installation were all the security was 'transposed' from GP9 when the upgrade was done several months back (I wasn't present when done). Basically the conversion tool creates a huge number of entries in the security tables that renders the logon process very slow. Also the converted security roles gave many users access to way too much resources that they needed, maybe due to a lack of proper security management in version 9.0.
However, the new security model is much easier to manage. For a deep explanation of the subject, take a look at David's post : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/developingfordynamicsgp/archive/2008/11/24/information-about-using-v10-0-security-conversion-tool.aspx
