Who has access to Vendor Combiner and Modifier?

We have many duplicate vendors that we would like to combine as one vendor, and some vendor ID's that need to be adjusted. We reveiwed the Vendor Combiner and Modifier utility when we did the upgrade but it wasn't a priority at that time. Now we are ready. Problem is that nobody seems to have access or know what access needs to be given in order for an employee to use it. Can access be given to someone other than the SA?

This is one of my projects for the year but I don't have the correct access to do it!

    Hello Kelly

Allow me to provide further insight on this issue since it is something that is frequently raised in the community. Some of the professional service tools library requires specifically and only the "sa" user to run the task, while others can be run with users other than "sa" with extensive privileges on the database level, such as the vendor combiner/ modifier utility which can be run with users other than the "sa" after they are granted the required extensive privileges on the database level.

Technically speaking, the vendor combiner and modifier utility runs various stored procedures in order to combine or modify vendors, which are:

    • pmVendorCombiner
    • pmVendorCombinerPost
    • pmVendorCombinerPre

The first procedure for instance, has to access the sysobjects, enable specific triggers such as taVendorAddressInsert ...etc. For that, admin privileges are required for the user running the utility, or you will get the following common error

Now a work around solution which is not quite recommended and could be classified as a security breach is to temporarily grant the user login a sysadmin role until this task is performed by them, then revoke this access.

Here is my test with a user (User13), I assigned the user to the sysadmin role, and then run the utility to combine two random vendor on the test company, and it run perfectly as expected without any issues,

Remember, this utility is now part of Dynamics GP windows and can be accessed from Dynamics GP > Tools > Utilities > Purchasing > Vendor Combiner and Modifer.

To grant the user access for this window, consider creating a custom security task according to the details below:

    Hi Kelly,

Mohmoud was right when he said that we need extensive privileges on the database level to perform this task. You can grant DB owner (db_owner) role access to the user who has to perform this action for temporarily and revoke it once done.
