I sometimes get about 10% failures importing Contacts - tried pretty small batches of about 500, then 100. The fields in the error file are scrambled which makes it seem like bad data - corrupted characters or something. Error message is pretty useless:
An unsecured or incorrectly secured fault was received from the other party. See the inner FaultException for the fault code and detail.
I doubt the inner FaultException would be real useful to me...
I took the time to figure out which 11 recs had failed last time, then reimported just those, and there were no failures. That implies it's not a data problem, but that the underlying import process is buggy. Is the Data Loader unreliable?? Am I wasting time with it?
Help please!

Yes, it's buggy. I finally gave up on the Data Loader and went back to using the built-in import, which has its own flaws, but at least not these random errors (so far!).
I am seeing the same behavior. I staged 100,000+ Account records and clicked the "Validate" button. Got the FaultException errors on ~5000 records after validation. Proceeded to imported the "good" records and left out the "bad" records. Re-imported the bad records later on and worked just fine. It's buggy.
I've now run a few more imports which included records that had previously failed. I made no changes to the data; just ran in smaller batches (100-200 Contacts) and all data imported. So it seems clear this is NOT a data problem, and that the Data Loader just isn't reliable! Has anyone used it consistently with success?
