I am new to Field Service Inspection Templates
I have a drop-down where I want to bring back as a pre populated value the Work Order that I am currently working on

As you know when you do an inspection template they are linked to a service task which then is linked to work order.
I wanted to pre populate a field with the Work order number that the User was currently filling in.
In my case it is drop down which is question 2 "The lookup work order values"

Unfortunately, there is no way to pre populate it. You can post your proposal in Ideas forum in order to drive it to be improved. However, before that please consider it is really required in your situation or not.
As you say, inspection template they are linked to a service task. So when you add your service task to a work order, there would be a required filed named Work Order to show work order number on the Work Order Service Task form. And the inspection will be visible on the bottom of the work order service task form. So your technicians can confirm the Work Order they are working on when they complete the service task. So may be there is no need to add the Question 2.
