Updating Item Records in GP

Is there a way to do a mass update of the same field in all Item records in GP?

Eg With the CRM I can export an excel file with record id and associated data fields for each record I can edit the various data fields and reload the list back into the CRM using a data loader tool - can you do something similar with GP?

TIA

Do you have knowledge of SQL and SSMS? That is an easy way to that. How about Integration Manager or Table Import? You do need to be careful and not destroy the integrity of the underlying data.

Not me but I'm sure there is someone on the Finance team, is there any "how to" documentation available for any of this?

I took a quick look at your suggested solutions they all seem to refer to importing data into GP - I'm looking to update existing data. Will any of these tools allow you to update specific fields on existing records? E.g. I have a Product Family with a large number if items that need to be changed to "Inactive" will any of these tools allow me to do that?

I wish there was something like the CRM way of doing things!

Unfortunately there is not, your choices are SQL or integration tools like smart connect that can be used for updating as well as importing, but not in such an end user fashion as CRM does it.

Alternative would be to write a Dynamics GP macro using mail merge (google it, lots of examples of how to do this online). You then run the macro and leave it to update your records, this is a relatively safe way of doing mass updates without the risk of going direct to SQL table data, the user interface still enforces the business rules.

Our product managers tend to use this method, it is easy to get the hang of after the first couple of goes.

I agree with Tim regarding the mail merged macro. This is my go to means to mass update records assuming a reasonable number of records (less than 1000 or so). I also find it slightly amusing to start running one of these, go to lunch, come back and still have my local client chugging away.

Our team has done a number of similar projects for various clients using the Excel Add-in Tool for SmartConnect with eOne. It does pretty much exactly what you described as a CRM feature.  Here is a link to an online overview of the feature www.youtube.com/watch

We used this tool to export a list of Customers that owe money and have ACH information, so a user can select which customers to collect payments from automatically, then pushed the information back into GP .

I like this suggestion Tim, found an excellent video on Youtube , will try it in our Test org next week.
