Having an issue where the OPOS receipt printer locks up and prevents the end user from logging into RMS POS

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

One of my end users is currently having an issue where the receipt printer is not released after printing a receipt after a transaction is being tendered, which leads to her not able to log into POS as the program will try to load the printer and fail to start up. This client is using Headquarters, and the issue is occurring in all three stores they have. All of the stores have the same exact hardware layout (computer, peripherals, etc.).

Troubleshooting has led me to the following:

1. Going into the register's properties and disabling the receipt printer ('Do not print receipts to this printer' and un-checking "Journal receipts printer from this printer" ) bypasses the issue and allows POS to load (albeit with no receipt printer, of course).

2. The end user has a set-up in the register properties where she would enable both Receipt Printer 1 and Receipt Printer 2 and point them to the same OPOS printer in order to print different receipt templates for the same transaction. If I disable Receipt Printer 2 entirely, the issue stops occurring entirely; otherwise, the printer locking up and the POS failing to load happens on a daily basis.

As of this moment the end user is only using 'Receipt Printer 1' to avoid the frequent occurrence of this issue, however they've stated that their 'Receipt Printer 2' functionality is key to their business and need it operational as soon as possible. I would like to know if anyone here has experienced a similar issue (and if they resolved, where would be a good point to start) or if there is an alternative solution for printing the same sale to the same receipt printer but using a different receipt template from the original.

Thanks, Rene G.

    Hi there.

Well, on 1º) I haven't had the possibility to work with this printer, so I can't help too much... Try the windows drivers and let see...

On 2º), well, don't know...maybe if we put that condition (the specific type of customer) into the design of the receipt, maybe can be achieved.... Not sure to be honest...

On 3º) what if you assign the second receipt on some local PDF or XLS printer, but not print it automatically, so the image will be saved and you can reprint it on the first printer (I think it pops up a small screen that asks you what printer you want to use)...

    Kind regards, A.

    Antonijo,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have had the "Share the OPOS printer with other applications" option enabled on all of their registers. Below are the replies to your questions:

    1. The receipt printer is a Star Micronics TSP 654 (Cutter), and it uses a parallel interface to connect with the computer. I am using their latest OPOS driver for Windows 7 Professional, however I can try to run the printer using Windows drivers and troubleshoot.

    2. The problem with this is that both tickets would print at the same time all the time, and the end user only needs the second receipt when they're selling to a specific type of customer.

    3. I tried this as part of my troubleshooting (sorry if I wasn't clear on the original post), but even like this, the receipt printer would lock up and the issue will occur. I had to uncheck the "Journal from this printer" checkbox in order for the issue to stop.

OK, assuming you have marked the OPOS config option (RMS SO Manager / File / Configuration / Options tab / POS options / Share the OPOS printer with other applications), here are few thoughts:

1º) what type of ticket printer we are talking? Maybe you can change the OPOS drivers with normal Windows drivers and avoid using OPOS ??

2º) you can change/redesign the Sales ticket to print two different tickets, with papercut in between, like 2 separate tickets...it should work with windows drivers, probably with OPOS also...

3º) you can define second printer not to print, but leave jurnal from this printer checkbox, so the "image" of the second ticket will be saved into RMS database and you add a simple CustomButton on the POS to print out the last ticket (which will exactly be your second ticket). Once the transaction is posted, the cashier will have to click on that button... I know its not perfect, but it's a workaround until you solve the issue...

    Regards, A.
