Business Portal Error

Out of nowhere, we are now getting a BP error when we attempt to load a new timesheet screen.  I have run the pcConfiguration.exe many times and the error does not resolve itself. We are running Dynamics SL 2011.  Any ideas on why this is now throwing an error?

We have also been getting this error.  It started happening right after we did our monthly windows patches on the servers.  The strange thing about this is, I am the administrator of the system and after I log in the timecard report, the connection all of sudden starts working again the error goes away for all the other users.  I am not 100% sure if this is a coincidence, or cause and affect.

I'm not sure it's a patching issue.  I rolled back everything as of 7/11/2018 and I 'm still getting the error.  I did a new BP install and this didn't solve the issue either.  This error started showing up late last week and was intermittent like yours for a few days.  Now, all users are getting the error above.

Has anyone found a solution to this yet? We are also having this intermittent issue since updates were install.

So no real solution yet from MS.  Here is what I did to possibly* fix it.  I rolled back every update on my terminal BP server that was throwing this error starting at 6/1/2018.  There was a .net update in there that I suspect was causing the issue. I also uninstalled the Dynamics client and all of the small services that are required for Dynamics 2011 that were on this terminal server (it was no longer working!!). On the SP server, I changed the owner of the Sharepoint application pool identity in IIS to domain admin.  I ran the pcConfiguration.exe on the SP server.  On the Dynamics server I ran the database update for security/ownership.  I then ran this sql script to set up the BFGROUP ownership (see below).  I then logged into the terminal server as domain admin and fired up BP.  It works!  I then re-installed Dynamics.  It now works.  Hope this helps.

if not exists (select * from sysusers where name = 'BFGROUP' and issqlrole = 1)

    exec sp_addrole 'BFGROUP'

    GO

    declare @cStatement varchar(255)

    declare G_cursor CURSOR for select 'grant select,update,insert,delete on "' + convert(varchar(64),name) + '" to BFGROUP' from sysobjects

where (type = 'U' or type = 'V') and uid = 1 order by name

    set nocount on

    OPEN G_cursor

FETCH NEXT FROM G_cursor INTO @cStatement

    WHILE (@@FETCH_STATUS <> -1)

    begin

                print @cStatement

    EXEC (@cStatement)

FETCH NEXT FROM G_cursor INTO @cStatement

    end

    DEALLOCATE G_cursor

    GO

    declare @cStatement varchar(255)

declare G_cursor CURSOR for select 'grant execute on "' + convert(varchar(64),name) + '" to BFGROUP' from sysobjects

where (type = 'P') and uid = 1 order by name

    set nocount on

    OPEN G_cursor

FETCH NEXT FROM G_cursor INTO @cStatement

    WHILE (@@FETCH_STATUS <> -1)

    begin

                print @cStatement

    EXEC (@cStatement)

FETCH NEXT FROM G_cursor INTO @cStatement

    end

    DEALLOCATE G_cursor

    GO

My organization installed Windows updates this past weekend, and the next day the BP timecard displayed

    Error:
The Microsoft Dynamics SL System Database name cannot be blank.
Your System Administrator should run pcConfiguration on the Business Portal server to fix this problem.

The strange thing is that as soon as I (a member of the BP Administrator group) logged into the BP, every project employee's timecard instantly started behaving correctly. I did not need to run pcConfiguration.

But the very next morning it threw the same error to users. So a member of BP Administrators logged in to the timecard, fixing the issue again for to all users. We then ran pcConfiguration and re-entered the credentials.

But this morning it broke again for all users, requiring a BP Administrator to log into the timecard. It's a very simple fix, but not sustainable longterm.

IT doesn't want to roll back patches, and I'm at a loss for a fix. It seems related to security somehow.

I've opened a ticket with our VAR, and if we get a resolution I'll report back.

Yep, this is what is happening in my organization as well.  PSFoster, I am wondering if you have confirmed that it is users from the BP Administrator SharePoint group that can reestablish the connection?  If that is the case, I am tempted to just add all my employees to BP Administrator group.  Then create a separate Admin group, remove BP Administrator permission to sites I don't want all employees to access and replace it with the new Admin group I created.

I should note, we are transitioning over to a different time entry system in two months and migrating to the latest SharePoint version shortly there after.  So, I only have a short time to period of having to deal with this issue.

I cannot say for certain, but it seems to relate to either the "BP Administrator" SP group or the "Administrator" role under their User Properties. Our admins are in both.

Well, my error came back this morning.  I logged in as domain admin on the BP site and it is now gone (again).  My VAR told me MS is getting a lot of complaints about this issue.

@roxiejeff1, My AD acct is not domain admin, so I'm not sure if that's it. Is your acct in "BP Administrators" SP group or the "Administrator" role under User Properties?

My normal AD login account is part of the BP Admin group.  When I logged into our BP sharepoint site using this account, the error was still thrown.
