Week Numbers incorrect for 2016

Hi,

We've got a chart which shows the development of Opportunities based on a snapshot taken every week (and recorded in a custom entity). These are organised by week number based on the date the snapshot was taken - a custom field rather than "created on" as this gives us a little flexibility to correct mistakes.

I've noticed that since the beginning of 2016 the week numbers have gone a bit weird, though. I've created some fake records with future snapshot dates and the following is happening:

27th December >> 31st December = week 53 2015 (correct)

1st & 2nd January = week 01 2016 (should still be week 53 2015)

3rd January >> 9th January = week 02 2015 (should be week 01 2016)

etc. (all future dates are 1 week ahead)

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Is it a bug?

Thanks!
Stephen

I think this is being consistent across the years. If 31st Dec 2015 is week 53 2015, then 1st Jan 2015 (which is 364 days earlier) would be week 1 2015, which is consistent with 1st Jan 2016 being week 1 2016.

There are several different ways that week numbers can be generated, and I'm not sure which one CRM uses, though I'm fairly sure it's a US approach, rather than those that are more commonly used in western Europe

    Thanks for the reply, David.

I guessed it would be consistent, but I can't work out if there is any real system, as week 01 in Dynamics this year only lasts 2 days. Unless, as you say it does automatically think that 1st Jan is week 01 and then sees 3rd is a Sunday and makes that the first day of the next week, which I think is common with American week numbering.

I can deal with the week beginning on a Sunday or a Monday, but the odd numbering for 2016 will cause us a problem or at least confusion on multiple occasions, I think. 2015 worked out fine strangely enough.

    Hi

We have noticed the same on our reporting systems in GP.

It does appear that in the set up of GP, the North American caluculation of week numbers has been used.

This can be fixed in excel by a simple formula change, can it be fixed in GP because as Stephen has mentioned it is causing a rather lot of confusion over here and will never catch up with itself.

Please see below the description found online to detail the difference between Europe and North America for how week numbers are calculated differently:

Rule: In Europe, the calculation of week numbers are governed by the rule ISO 8601. This rule considers that the first week of the year must be at least 4 days. A year that begins on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday is not considered as a week.

For North America, on the other hand, this rule does not exist: the calculation of numbers begins with the first day of January (Sunday the 1st January is the week #1 and Monday the 2nd January is the week #2)

Has anybody managed to get a fix in GP itself?

    Thanks

    Emma

    Hi,

i got the same problem, but when i went to settings -> administration -> system settings -> format and from the current format, click customize and on the tab date you can change when you want your weeks to start counting. As default, first day of the new year, or the new year's first full week with at least four days in it, or the first full week at the new year. That solved at least my problem. Hope i helped you aswell.

Martin's answer about customising the date format settings should help you choose an ISO-standard week numbering instead of the US system.

As well as the January 1st vs January 4th issue, also make sure the first day of the week is as you would expect, ie do the Sundays fall in the expected week (maybe not a big issue if you don't do business at weekends, but worth checking for those users who do some data entry outside normal hours for example).

    Hi there

I have a similar issue in that the system calendar shows W/C 25th May 2016 as week 17.

Exactly as it should be meaning that it is taking week numbers from the first full week of the year (4th Jan start).

However, I have a chart showing number of appointments per week and it is showing the week of the 25th as Week 18 (when it should be 17).

The criteria for the chart is: Vertical Axis - Subject: Count:All, Horizontal - Start Time:Week

    Any help much appreciated.

    Chris
