Remote Database Connection

I'm trying to install POS 2009 on a workstation and connect to a database that is running on the server.

When I click the Change Connection button and type in my server name I get the following error message.

 'To complete this operation you must be logged on to this computer using an account that is an Administrator on both this computer and on the database computer.  However, you cannot use the account that is named "Administrator". For more information, see "About system administration from a register computer" in Manager View Help.

I've tried to setup accounts to handle this, but I can't seem to get around it.

Thanks,

Donald Woods

    Re: Remote Database Connection

    Hello Ashishg,

    This is a very open ended question as there could be a number of possible issues.

    1. Temporarily disable all anti-viruses to ensure they don't have a firewall with them and test.

    2. Switch to using IP addresses, as sometimes DNS's have issues and then try again.

    3. Work with a network engineer to ensure that you can ping the server from the registers.

    4. Ensure that you have network connectivity.

    5. Be sure that the account name and password are correct in the configuration. Test by trying on a known working system before trying on the non-working station.

    This is good overall troubleshooting steps.

    There is also a KB article on common network troubleshooting for RMS:

    support.microsoft.com/.../930301

    Although Point of Sale is not the exact same as RMS, since most of these steps go over SQL Settings, the majority will still be applicable.

    In POS 2009, you will also need to ensure that the same Administrator user account is created exactly the same on the register and the server.  Same password, same username, case sensitive, etc.

    Best Regards,

    Shawn with Microsoft Retail Support.

    Re: Remote Database Connection

    Hi, I am in the same situation.

    I have a central database on HOME-PC where I have created 2 user accounts (home & pop1) and now I have my register with a user account pop1 and trying to connect with the database but no luck so far. Plz help I need to set up the systems in a day or two.

    My Usage Scenario

    home-pc = central db

    coord = back office Manager

    pop1 = register 1

    pop2 = register 2

    Firewalls on both machines are disabled. What to do?

    Re: Remote Database Connection

    To add to Phil's comment on this issue, you need to use an ~Identical~ (same case sensitive user name and password) account that has admin rights on both computers.  Be sure that after you create these accounts that you restart both computers.  Another thing that tends to help is using the IP address instead of the computer name.

    You need to make sure your windows logon account is not the administrator account. The account you are using say "RETAIL" has to have admin rights and is also the account in use on the server.

    Does this help?
