Troubleshoot Dynamics Trace files

Our organization has purchased a product from a vendor that was built on Microsoft Dynamics.  We have been having some performance issues with the product and are not getting much help from the vendor.  I have noticed that we are constantly getting errors in our local Dynamics CRM trace files.  Does anyone know how to relate the errors in the trace files back to processes/workflows, plugins, etc in our Dynamics application?  Our errors usually have stack traces and a message but nothing that relates to the actual source in Dynamics.  We ask our vendor and they tell us that errors in the trace files are normal, or the trace files are not helpful.

I would clear the trace files.

Then  turn on tracing and test one area of CRM, now down the time you do things.  You will then know the trace files are related to that area of functionality.

Trace file do have a lot of noise and often have some errors which are not really important.

The trace files should give you details about the plugins and workflows, so I'm not sure why you don't understand them, did you write the plugins and workflows? Do you know what you are looking for?

Considering that you are facing performance issues, does these traces tell any thing about SQL queries timing out? The event logs on the CRM server would also be a good point to look into for such time outs/query taking too long to complete messages. What are the errors on? It would be helpful if the forum can see them.

    Hi YZ1,

Right, the Trace files can be used to see the log of errors caused by Plugin or Workflow (somehow plugin that is not created by developer, but out of the box logic there can cause error)... And don't think can be good to trace the performance issues.

You can also see the event viewer, sometimes it gives you SQL Timeout error which later you can monitor your SQL Performance, maybe you can also enhance your logic to reduce the Long SQL Processes or you can also limit the SQL Query.

For the performance issue, you can try to do a stress test, SQL Monitoring, CPU Task Manager monitoring.

You can also see this link:

    and this:

It also can be because your server is too overload also depends on your Topology and Architecture, including how many server, how powerful one server and do you have separated servers and NLB.

    Thanks.
