Currency Field updating when attempting to delete a record

Hello - 

We are attempting to Bulk delete records in our On Premise system CRM 2016. We are using our delete query to identify records that are 2 years or older based on the ModifiedBy field. When we ran the bulk delete a significant amount of records did not delete as we expected. The audit history showed as the call was made to delete the records the currency field on the Opportunity was updated and thus changed the original ModifiedBy field date. The question that we have is, why did the system update the currency field? It did not change any values in the field. Also, why did this happen to only a selct few records, as this is a required field? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
