POS Not Responding

Hello all!

Within the past week or two, we have had 1 of our 2 registers start to hang up after a cashier logs in and before/during the task pad loads.  The program will typically catch back up after 20-30 seconds.  The other register has shown no signs of this issue, so I initially thought hardware failure and replaced the HDD to no avail.

I've watched the Windows Resource Monitor but the only abnormal activity during the hang ups is the POS program maxing out one core and going into a Not Responding status.  Is there something else I can or should check?

The only thing holding me back from reinstalling, or reformatting and reinstalling, is the fact that the other register is having no issues whatsoever.

Edit...  Another odd part, it seems to do this every other time a cashier signs in.  We are set up so a cashier has to sign in for each sale, so there a busy times where someone will be signing in multiple times in a short period.

2nd Edit ... Some more trial & error and it seems to be only when it's trying to load the custom task pad buttons which are basically just images in each button, all less than 10KB.  Removed those and the register logs right in over and over, etc.  Put the images back and the register hangs.  Again, the oddest part to me is the fact that this is only happening on 1 of the 2 registers even though they both are pulling the same exact images from the server, nothing is loaded locally on the PCs.

And if it helps, registers and server are all Win7Pro 32-bit and hard hardwired, no wi-fi.

Just last week I had 2 problems occur that took this one solution to fix.

Initially any Task Pad with pictures as buttons was taking a very long time to load, sometimes over a minute.  Assuming this was a HDD failure incoming, I imaged the drive and swapped it, the problem continued.

The day after the HDD swap, the POS stopped opening all together showing a Server Failure 139 message.  Tried repairing the POS program, tried uninstalling and reinstalling, nothing was working.

Found this thread and decided it wouldn't hurt to try pulling some of the Temp files out and putting them in another folder, incase moving them made it worse.  Took any Temp file from last week and moved it to another folder and the POS started connecting again, but still had trouble loading the Taks Pads with pictures.

Moved any Temp file that was from the past few weeks, when the issue seemed to start, and like magic the Task Pads started loading instantly again!

TL;DR ... if you are getting a Server Failure 139 or your Task Pads are very slow to load when they weren't before, try deleting your temp files back to about the time the problem started.

Thanks for that you took the trouble to post your solution.
may I suggest that now and then cleaning the hard drive keeps the machine in good condition.

CCleaner has free and paid versions http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner works like a charm.

I also used Ccleaner and even paid for the pro version, cause at that time I needed real-time monitoring and automatic updates. But recently I've found a review of registry cleaner tools. This is a detailed article that outlines the pros and cons of these programs. In addition, there are all the necessary prices and recommendations for use. Btw most of them are totally free. There I found Eusing Registry Cleaner, which included all the services I needed. So, I'm convinced that you'll find something free for yourself.
