Hi Friends,

I was looking for some blogs and videos about the upgrade process in Dynamics 365 from AX 2009 and from AX 2012.

Below are the questions for which I need the answers.

1. Upgrade from AX 2009 to Dynamics 365 is called migration but upgrade from AX 2012 to Dynamics 365 is called full upgrade (why ?).

2. I could not found any article blog related to the code upgrade process from AX 2009 to Dynamics 365  but I found that Microsoft is using a Data migration tool to upgrade the data in this process. My question is - Without doing the code upgrade how are the data upgrade is happening, how about the custom fields in AX 2009 tables are brought into Dynamics 365 ?

Regards

For 1: For 2012 R3 to D365 upgrade, Microsoft to provides tools/scripts to allow you to bring your transaction data with you.

2009 > D365 you only have tools to bring base data and configuration - so you lose all your history.

For 2: not accurate - see above.

X++ code update is available from model store to D365. There was no model store in AX2009. Early versions of AX2012 such as feature pack, were also not having model store.

This means only choice is to upgrade code from AX2012 to D365. Probably you ca follow following sequence.

    1) Upgrade code from AX2009 to AX2012 (try to keep it minimum AX2012 R3-CU9)

    2) Upgrade code from AX2012 to D365

    3) Transfer data from AX2009 to D365 using given tooling.

If you have less or minor customizations in AX2009, you may think to re-implement. Lot of story has changed over time. AX2009 having 2700 tables (almost) turned to a big application called AX2012, having almost 8000 tables. Items changed to products and items, warehousing came in. number of financial dimensions became unlimited from three.

There was recently a very good webinar held by MVP Alex Kwitny touching up on this, have a look:

    [View:https://msdynamicsworld.com/webcast/upgrade-or-migrate-understand-your-path-dynamics-ax-4020092012-dynamics-365-recorded-webcast:750:50]

As for data upgrade, it only came out with the July update and there are not that much experience with the success rates and effort involved with using the tools:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/unified-operations/dev-itpro/migration-upgrade/data-upgrade-2012

From what I can tell it is probably a similar experience with the ReleaseUpdate* scripts as with previous versions.
