I want to create a workflow to automatically create a sharepoint folder for certain contact types. Is this possible?

Yes this is possible but you would need SharePoint skills to write code which will authenticate and create folder. Once you know how to doo it in sharepoint you can create a custom workflow activity and call you sp code.
