Can Transfer Orders & MP be used to transfer between locations in a single warehouse?

Our company uses a single warehouse in AX to stock both finished goods and raw materials.  Often, we will store our overstock for an item in a separate location from it's default location (all within the same warehouse).

This problem we are faced with is not knowing when to refill an items default location from its overstock location, without having to physically walk over and say, 'hey, we need more'.

I wonder if Master Planning and Transfer Order can help with this issue, or if there is another solution within AX.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

    Hi Djara,

Standard AX has the functionality to cater for this requirement.

The only condition to use this excellent functionality is that your warehouse should be using advance warehouse operations.

The functionality of replenishment in warehouse.

Transfer orders cannot help you in this as they are warehouse to warehouse transfers and do not cater for with warehouse operations.

I don't have AX 2009 on which I can test, but I think asking Master Planning to plan for transfers between locations of the same warehouse is a big ask.....

... however, it seems even in AX 2012, you can create a Dimension Group which has a 'Location' line which has 'Coverage plan by dimension' ticked. Which, on the face of it, suggests that Master Planning can consider demand at a location level.

In AX 2012, there is also a parameter which you can use to get Master Planning to create Transfer Journals (instead of Transfer orders). It's enabled on the 'Site' (which I think was optional in AX 2009) and is discussed here:

    https://organicax.com/2016/02/02/use-transfer-journals-for-movement-within-site/

I did not test it to your scenario, and I still think it won't work (I don't see how you can set Item coverage to handle it), but it sounds like fun to try!

Really, and the type of intra-warehouse inter-location movement you are describing is a 'replenishment'. In AX 2009, you can get replenishments by using the WMS II module. I'm not sure if you're refilling a location that contains an item that you sell, or an item that you consume in production. Location replenishments in the selling item scenario are definitely supported in WMS II. I never used it in a production picking scenario.

    Hi,

Did you try to enable the coverage plan by location and setting up item coverage min max with locations?

    1. Enable coverage by plan to location in the item storage dimension group

    2. Give Min max values against the locations for the same warehouse two lines(Location in item coverage form will be enabled upon the step 1 changes)

Since we dont have refilling based on the location(as its limited to warehouse) so the auto transfer order generation based on the location to location is ruled out.

Instead same warehouse two locations item coverage to be defined min max values, based on the on hand qty and coverage group settings, Planning engine would trigger planned orders for the location defined against the Product item coverage.

This may help to manage the location wise stock replenishment within the warehouse :)

    Regards,

    Girish

I gave it a test in AX 2012. As I feared, I can only set Item coverage to refill from a Warehouse (not a location within a Warehouse), and I cannot set it to refill from the same warehouse.

The best I could get were Transfer journals for the Location I want, but from the wrong warehouse. In AX 2009, I do not think you will even be able to get this, because I don't think it's possible for Master Planning in AX 2009 to create Transfer Journals.
