mailing groups vs segments

Please can you help me with the difference between mailing groups and segments, and how I would use each? To me they both seem to be groups of contacts and I need to know the difference.

RE: mailing groups vs segments

You can use segments for contacts grouping based on different information. You can select contacts to be included in the segment according to different criteria that you choose, for example LOB, territory code, industry, job responsibilities, profile criteria, and so on.

You can use Mailing Groups only for grouping based on mailing lists.
