Unable to create a Dynamics SL project 2011 using Visual studio 2010.  Two types of errors:

1) If I try to launch the 2010 program from the VT directory I get the error message "unable to read the project ... C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framwork\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.Tragets(56,7)... cannot be evaluated.  Version String portioin was too short or too long.

or If I try to build a project developed in SL 7.0 I get the message ... "Could not load file or assembley file.... Interop.saf.dll or one of its dependencies"

Background.  New computer loaded visual studio 2005 with the upgrad of 2010.  Solomon 2011 works.  Its just that I can't get VS2010 to create a projects.

    Hello Keith,

The system requirements guide for SL 2011 indicates that Visual Studio 2008 SP2 is supported for use with Microsoft Dynamics SL Software Development Kit.  Visual Studio 2010 has not been tested for use with Dynamics SL 2011 that I know of.

However, could it be that the SAF controls are missing?  Could you try the following steps?

KB 942784 has some steps to add the toolkit to visual studio. The steps are:

    1. In Visual Studio 2005, right-click anywhere in the toolbox, and then click Choose Items.

    2. In the Choose Toolbox Items dialog box, click the .NET Framework Component tab, and then click Browse.

    3. Locate and then select the Interop.SAF.dll file. Then, click Open.

Note The default location of the Interop.SAF.dll file is the following folder:

    Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Dynamics SL

    4. Verify that the check box for each component name that begins with "SAF" is selected. Then, click OK.

HI Caroly, Thanks for the reply I didn't think I was going to get one. :-)  I'll start checking daily.  No thats' not the issue.  I think the problem has to do with the .net framework.  The error message below is addressed out on the msdn web site "Version String portioin was too short or too long" and its a know ms bug but I still have problem.  Since MS no longer sells VS 2008 how do I get a copy... even though I just bought VS2010?

unable to read the project ... C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framwork\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.Tragets(56,7)... cannot be evaluated.  Version String portioin was too short or too long.

    Hi Keith,

I was wrong.  It is supported with Dynamics SL 2011.  There are some issues with using it on a 64 bit OS, but if you use it in a 32 bit environment it  works well.  There are some blogs about the issues in a 64 bit environment that you may find useful on how to get around the problem.

Hi Caroly,  Ok I reformatted and installed the 32 bit environment.  I still have the same issue.  I can't open the Solomon Visaul Studio 2010 project.  Now what do I do?

unable to read the project ... C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framwork\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.Tragets(56,7)... cannot be evaluated.  Version String portioin was too short or too long.

Hi Carolyn,  I decieded to install vs2008.  Not sure what the problem is with vs2010 but 2008 seem to do the trick.

    Thanks

    Keith
