Solomon 6.5 SQL Error 18456

My client had contracted a Dymanics specialist to install and configure Solon 6.5 for them. Now that he is gone, I'm stuck having to support this.

I get constant errors in the Windows event log stating:

 Event Type: Failure Audit
Event Source: MSSQLSERVER
Event Category: (4)
Event ID: 18456
Date:  9/18/2008
Time:  10:28:54 AM
User:  ACDOMAIN\melissa
Computer: ACRS004
Description:
Login failed for user ACDOMAIN\melissa'. [CLIENT: 192.168.1.71]

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I get them on the Solom server for each of the Solomon users, contantly throughout the day. It fills my event logs. Does anyone know why?

Also, they Solomon guy didn't want to upgrade to Dynamics 7 until a service pack was eleased. Now that he's gone, I may be forced to upgrade his customized installation. I have great concerns with this. Should I and simply let my client run 6.5 forever, or will the upgrade not harm any customizations he's done?

 Thanks for you help.

Wow... that could be a slight problem.  Here's how I would go about it.

     1)  Does ACDOMAIN\melissa own any objects in the instance of SQL Server that Solomon is using?  I'd specifically check for triggers or possibly DTS/SSIS packages.  Pretty much anything that is triggered to run or scheduled to run.

    2)  When you say "customized installation", do you mean the previous "expert" created a lot of customized screens or did a lot of customized SQL in the database.  If we're just talking from a screen perspective then you should be fne by just exporting the screens one by one and the reimporting once you upgrade to 7.0 (with SP1 and all the hotfixes).  Also, you may want to make sure that the screen customizations were done with VBA and not BSL.  The VBA skillset is a lot easier to find than BSL (at least in my experience).

    3)  Your client will have no problem running on version 6.5 until Microsoft ends support of that product.  I'm not positive of the exact support end date but I do know you're not in any immediate danger of that happening since 7.0 is really just now starting to get traction among most of the install base.

Are your users experiencing issues while working in Solomon due to these errors in event log?  If not, you may want to look at your sql server or other programs that may be talking to this server. Look for sql logs and see if anything you can spot in there.

Is Solomon working for you after the move?

When you moved your DBs to different server, have you changed server references in your Domain table?

    Yes

I changed server reference in domain table.

People are working fine, but only in SQL event viewer is faliure audit.

User dont have any issue, but my concern is why SQL server is getting audit faliure.

SQL server also setup as mixed mode and I believe solomon use Master60SP user to access SL database.

    Thanks

Re: Re: Re: Solomon 6.5 SQL Error 18456

    Are you seeing such messages?

    Event Type:    Failure Audit
    Event Source:    MSSQLSERVER
    Event Category:    (4)
    Event ID:    18456
    Date:        1/17/2008
    Time:        1:29:00 PM
    User:        DOMAIN\User
    Computer:    SERVERNAME
    Description:
Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\user'. [CLIENT: <local machine>]

What user and computer entries are showing up?  Are they pointing to Solomon user?

This might give some clue as to what is going on. And also, you may want to use SQL Profiler trace to track down the source of this error.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Solomon 6.5 SQL Error 18456

    Hi

If you refer my first mail, you will get complete message.

    It's pointing to AD users(domain\user).

I ran sql profiler also but no clue.

    Thanks

    Raj

So, the same AD user is showing up in the log? May be there are jobs that are running under this AD account that are failing?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Solomon 6.5 SQL Error 18456

    Hi

it's not for 1 user, it's for all users who have solomon access.

I believe all users are trying to login as windows authentication and then using Master60SP user.

    Thanks
