Is it possible to export CRM data from 2011 and import in later version?

Our company was bought out by a new company. We have been able to bring over a copy of Dynamics CRM 2011 on-premise and have been working with it for some time successfully. We want to upgrade to a newer version (like 2016 on-premise).

The previous company had made some customizations to CRM since they had developers on staff. Our new company is very small and we do not have any on-staff developers. We simply want to see if we can export data from 2011 and import it into 2016. We have around 3,000 accounts in CRM currently.

I looked into going through the upgrade path of 2011>2013>...etc but I found that the customizations and possibly javascript the former company made would need to be addressed before upgrading. I am wondering if it would be easier to just keep the data without the extra customizations to keep things simple.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello,

There are many ways to export data from legacy CRM and import to new.

    1. You should try to use standard export/import functionality. Personally I have never tried that but you have a great opportunity to check how it works.

    2. If 1 doesn't work you always can use some additional soft to migrate your data. For example SSIS and KingswaySoft Adapters for CRM that support both CRM 2011 and CRM 2016.

Andrii, when you say use the standard export/import functionality, are you referring to exporting/importing with Excel? If not, can you clarify?

    Thanks!

Yes. I meant standard export/import functionality.

Correct, with Excel.  Fair warning, that's only if you need a simplified model of the data that's in their current CRM.  Getting the full complexity of their data generally requires going through the upgrade process like you're already reviewing.

SSIS/Scribe is a good middle ground, but I think you'd have better luck going upgrade route
