How to know which solution contains a particular customization?

Hi,

Currently the CRM instance for one of our client is having nearly 150 solutions (Managed and Unmanaged).

I am a bit confused while trying to know the order in which the solutions are applied to the instance.

Also, I am completely clueless when I want to figure out which solution contains a particular customization? Its not that convenient to open each and every solution (when you have nearly 150 solutions), and finding a particular customization.

Is there any easy way/ tool which can show me a all customization applied on the instance currently, along with solution name containing a particular customization?

Thanks and Regards,

Nirman

    Hi Nirman,

    The short answer is no!

Managed solutions are applied in the order that they were installed and so there is layering where each solution will add to the previous. Some aspects of a solution are merged (msdn.microsoft.com/.../gg309329.aspx). For this reason it is very difficult to establish where customization such as form changes come from.

Although you can get some information on the source solution from the SDK, the most affective way of working out what is in each solution is to go back to the solutions themselves (as installed), unzip and look at the solution.xml and customizations.xml - this then will show you exactly what was applied.

Unmanaged solutions are not linked once installed and so the solution is just a vehicle rather than the parent for the customizations.

    Hope this helps,

    Scott
