Extensions deleted from Production

Yesterday (03/11/25), Microsoft updated my client’s production system to version 27.0 and deleted the extensions. They were incompatible, but the update to 27.0 should have failed instead of deleting extension. Is this a new normal?

Its look like, Microsoft’s cloud upgrade process automatically removes incompatible extensions instead of failing the upgrade.

If Custom Extensions are not compatible  , Production Environment does not get upgraded .
Steps which we followed for our customers for Version upgrade ,

    1) you have to make all the custom extensions compatible to higher version . Check in UAT it gets published or not in higher version
2)After successful UAT , you can consider extensions are compatible
3)you have to uninstall  existing extensions in older version in  production environment ( Ensure you dont unpublish)
    4) Set to upgrade to next version
    5) After upgrade publish install the compatible custom extensions
    6) Check the table information before and after upgrade to ensure there is no data loss

    Hi,

Microsoft may uninstall incompatible extensions during updates to ensure the environment remains operational. This is part of the app maintenance lifecycle for SaaS environments.

    What the documentation says:

    • If an extension is not compatible with the new version, Microsoft can remove it automatically during the update.

    • This prevents blocking the update and ensures the tenant stays functional.

    • Admins should monitor compatibility and update extensions before major version upgrades

    Hello,

No, it’s not new. If extensions are incompatible with a major update, Microsoft now gives partners time to fix them; if not resolved, the system uninstalls them so the upgrade can proceed. To avoid this, always test in preview and upload a compatible version marked “Deploy to Next major version.”

    Hi,

If an extension is incompatible and not updated in time, the system may uninstall it automatically to ensure the environment remains operational. This prevents blocking the upgrade and keeps the tenant functional.

    Thanks
