Hi
Can anyone help with the following question/ observation.
“I have a question with regard to how extensively Dynamics AX 2012 R3 Projects module encompasses Project Management methodology and the responsibilities of a Project Manager.
Typically a PM will firstly plan a project by setting up the WBS, Start Dates, End Dates, Resources and Costs in MS Project. Once the project starts, the PM will baseline the project to create a snapshot of the original plan and will, thereafter, until the project ends, enter “Actual” Start Dates, End Dates, Resources and Costs and probably modify the WBS. Comparison of the Baseline data with the Actual data during the life of the project is what enables the PM to manage the ever changing project environment and is why Microsoft Project is such a useful and powerful tool.
Having gone through the majority of available training material in Dynamics 2012 Projects, although by no means an expert, I am struggling to see how Dynamics AX handles the “in progress “ phase of a project and how it takes in “Actual” data or is the expectation that Dynamics AX should always be used with MS Project with AX handling the postings that drive Invoicing and Billing while MS Project handles the Project Management side of the endeavour. “

Hi, interesting question. I have mused over this quite a bit myself and I don't think there is a definitive right or wrong answer here. I have a view that MS Project is a project management tool, and AX Projects is a project accounting tool and never should the two cross. But that is a bit too black and white maybe, and clearly there is a deal of cross over as you elude to - you can set costs on resources and mark progress in MS project, and AX does have a work breakdown structure and other PM tools, but are you really going to do full cost analysis and complex WIP calculations in MS Project? And are you really going to ask AX to do complex multi-project resource planning, dependency management and conflict management? Probably not.
You can certainly push AX very close, particularly if you add one of the ISV solutions like Adeaca Advanced Projects, but you might still find yourself doing those planning sessions on your old favourite.
I can't comment on the integration to Project / Project server capabilities or if this reasonably mitigates either product shortfall/overlap because I've not seen it done successfully yet.
I think the trick here is to be very clear in scoping what function you need and which product, for you, serves that function best. First plan in MS Project? Probably. Capture costs in AX? Certainly. Bill from AX? Certainly. The areas that require more thought, and it depends on your exact project needs, would be budgeting, revision management, and resource planning.
In AX 2012 Projects Project Planning, Execution and Controlling can be done with or without MS Project.
A project manager can create WBS with - Start/End Date - assign resources with cost - for each activities remaining in AX .
Besides this various type of Projects can be managed, hours/expenses/fee can be booked on projects(chargeable or non changeable), projects can be invoiced or eliminated to fixed assets.
