Can I add a new segment to the Project Number field within Flex Key Maint?

We currently have a five character project number defined (2 segments - yy-nnn) within Flexible Key Maintenance. As long as we don't edit the existing segment length or validation parameters, is it acceptable to add another segment to the number (ex. yy-nnn-aaaa) and not jeopardize access to project history? It appears it can be done, are there any repercussions? Forecaster, etc.?

Adding a third segment shouldn't cause any problems that we know of.
