Any Dynamics CRM 2011 shops out there running multi-site replication between domains in remote locations?

Hello Dynamics Community,

I'm looking for information on anyone's experience with multi-site replication between two domains in remote locations from each other.  Let's say, Domain1 and Domain2 are at different locations in the same state (quite remote), but are trusted domains to each other.  Domain2 is a failover site for Domain1 in the event of disaster.  Dynamics (Central SQL DB) is running on Domain1 and needs to failover and be operational upon failover as quickly as possible. Although the reasons are understood as to why replication is not supported (table drops, etc.), we still need a solution to have the Central SQL database running on Domain2 in the event of a failure on Domain1.

We've gone through several design iterations and discovered that we can't even have Domain2 users logged into the same Dynamics system on Domain1 because they are on different domains (I don't get this because users are all authenticated between the two domains).   Our architecture team is a bit on edge about not having this piece ironed out yet, so any experiences or recommendations are welcomed in a response.

Thanks, Shauna

    Shauna,

Are the two domains part of the same Forrest?

If so, can you add the users from Domain2 into CRM?

    Hi Gus,

Domain1 and Domain2 are trusted and in the same forest to the best of my knowledge.  In CRM in the users area, we should be able to add the users from Domain2 no problem.  This is purely hypothetical at this point, but that is what we'd like to do.

The problem seems to come in with being able to have both sets of users on these two different domains access one central SQL database on Domain1.  And then, failing it over quickly enough to be back on line at the site making Domain2 the primary until it gets failed back.

This seems like it would be simple enough, but without replication, it certainly is more challenging.  Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks, Shauna

My questions is, can you add users in CRM from both domains?

Yes, I believe we can because both sets of users reside in both domains for physical site failover capability.

If you can create the user in CRM, can they log into CRM?

This is the part we have not tested yet, we have a demo site in the cloud but the domain scenario is really only on paper at this point.  We are trying to document whether it can be done before we send people to build it.  We've got full blown data center licensing on the way, not built yet though.  The domain answers given are what I know of the environment so far.  We were hoping more advanced individuals like yourself might be able to shed some light.  We may just have to go forward and test the whole scenario out, but it it is always the best to get answers from people who may have done this already.  Maybe our scenario is different than the majority of users on Dynamics and maybe new in its application of Dynamics, I'm not sure.

I have deployed CRM4 OnPrem on Multi-Domain and Multi-Country organizations and as long as the Domains trust each other there is no issue with access.

Gus, thank you.  This does sound like the answer we needed to be more confident about the architecture.  I did confirm that we are actually in a two-way domain trust, but the domains are in separate forests.  Hopefully that doesn't change the answer.  Let me know, thanks!

    Hi again Gus,

I found the answer!  For users who access Microsoft Dynamics CRM from another forest and are not using claims-based authentication, a two-way trust must exist between the forests.

    msdn.microsoft.com/.../hh699704.aspx

YAY!  We have a two-way trust between the forests.

Thanks so much for your feedback, your answer prompted further research and we now have our answer for the Central SQL DB residing on one domain.   You rock!
