Cannot update Originating Lead field on Account

(0) ShareShare

If a user adds an Account, and does not select an Originating Lead at the time of adding, then the field cannot be updated after that.  There is no way to select a lead once the Account has been saved.

Does anyone know of a way to get around this?

    Hi Tim,

This field is filled out automatically when you convert a Lead into an Account.  If you are not using Leads and following this processs--what are you hoping to put in this field?

We are not using leads, because our lead base is pretty small.  Our business users decided that we pre-load all potential prospects as accounts.  Then, if we begin pursuing an account, they would like to enter the source of the lead on the account.  The source may be another client, a banker, industry expert, etc., and they would like to put them in as leads.

    Hi Tim,

It is perfectly fine to not use leads if you have a small potential market--this is best practices.  However, it would not be best practices to keep referral sources as Leads.

Without knowing all of your requirements, I would consider putting all of your business partners, industry experts, etc. into CRM as Accounts and Contacts (using the Relationship Type on the Acccount to indicite what their relationship to your organization is), and then creating a connection with the Role of Referred By/Referral.  If this needs to be immediately visible from the record, you can easily create a sub-grid on the Account to show connections.  Here is a blog on how to create connections.

    Tim,

The exact answer to your initial question, which I believe remains unanswered:

    1) Convert the Lead into (at minimum) an Account

    2) Merge the Account created in Step 1 with the existing Account which lacks a Lead reference, be sure that the Account created in Step 1 is the master record, for other fields in the merge window just choose whichever contains the most accurate data during the merge process.

Based on your situation, I would use Leads.  Leads speed data entry and provide additional visibility into trends. In addition, they eliminate the problem you've mentioned.

I've never heard of the Best Practice mentioned by Gretchen but I would definitely read any information that would explain that in more detail!

    Thanks,

    Scott Moore

    Hi Tim,

I may have misunderstood your response--I interpreted that you were planning to KEEP those referral sources as Leads--not put them in as Leads initially and then convert them.  Leads are a temprorary place to put people you don't know or don't want to know.  However, as Scott said, you can put people in as Leads (for easy data entry) and convert them to Account/Contacts. I was recommending that you keep people as Accounts/Contacts long-term, but you do not want to KEEP people you know in Leads long-term.  I apologize if I misunderstood and caused confusion.

"Best practices" is not an official document--this is a general term for using the system as it is designed.  New contacts generally come into the CRM as Leads, and when you are able to build a relationship with them or when their is an opportunity, then they are converted to Account/Contact and potential an Opportunity. Accounts and Contacts are designed to track relationships with people you know, and the features and functions of MSCRM operate with this understanding.

Just a couple of examples of this--you can create multiple Contacts for a single Account (company), but you cannot do that with Leads.  You can sync the Contacts to your Outlook and in turn your phone, but you cannot do that with Leads.

Correction: That is supposed to say "Leads are a temprorary place to put people you don't know or don't know if you want to know"

We have some contacts with duplicate leads created directly as a contact before we had a duplicate rule set up for this. I would like to deactivate the lead and attach it to the contact as originating lead.

Is there any way to do this?
